As she goes from struggling widow to Broadway star, a basically kind-hearted but somewhat self-centred actress fails to notice the problems of those around her, including: her saintly maid’s daughter’s racial identity issues, her own daughter’s budding sexuality, and her photographer boyfriend’s growing disdain for her single-mindedness. Precise mise en scène, intense, vaguely ironic scoring, and a raft of full-blooded yet tremendously moving performances combine to brilliant effect in Sirk’s tear-jerkingly masterful melodrama.
